Why SEO Matters for Your Blog
Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) is how you get free, organic traffic from Google. Unlike social media where your reach disappears as soon as you stop posting, a well-optimised blog post can bring in visitors for years. SEO is the long game — it takes 3–6 months to see meaningful results — but it's the most sustainable and scalable traffic source for any blog. Every minute you spend on SEO now pays dividends for years to come.
Configure Your SEO Plugin Properly
Open your SEO plugin's settings (Rank Math → Dashboard or Yoast → General). Set your site type to 'Blog'. Configure your title format — we recommend: Post Title | Blog Name. Set a default meta description template. Enable XML sitemaps (this creates an automatic map of all your pages for Google). Under 'Search Appearance', set your homepage SEO title, description, and ensure blog posts and pages are set to 'indexable' while author archives and date archives are set to 'noindex' (they create duplicate content issues).
Set Up Google Search Console
Go to search.google.com/search-console and add your property using the 'URL prefix' method. Verify ownership using the HTML tag method — your SEO plugin usually has a verification field for this. Once verified, submit your XML sitemap (usually at yourdomain.com/sitemap_index.xml) under 'Sitemaps'. Search Console will now show you which keywords bring traffic, which pages are indexed, and any errors Google encounters when crawling your blog. Check it weekly.
Set Up Google Analytics
Create a Google Analytics 4 property at analytics.google.com. Install the Site Kit plugin (covered in our plugins guide) and connect your Analytics account. This gives you detailed visitor data: how many people visit, which pages they read, how long they stay, and where they come from. Set up conversion tracking for key actions like email signups or product purchases. Data without action is useless — review your analytics monthly and double down on what's working.
On-Page SEO Fundamentals
Every post and page should have: a unique title tag containing your target keyword (under 60 characters), a compelling meta description (under 155 characters), proper heading hierarchy (one H1, multiple H2s, H3s as needed), descriptive image alt text, internal links to your other relevant posts, and at least one external link to an authoritative source. Your URL should be short and include your keyword. These basics alone put you ahead of most bloggers.
Create Essential SEO Pages
Your blog needs several key pages for SEO and trust: an About page (tells Google and visitors who you are), a Contact page (signals legitimacy), a Privacy Policy (legally required and a trust signal), and category pages with descriptions (help Google understand your site structure). Each page should have unique content — don't leave any page thin or empty. These pages form the foundation of your site's authority and trustworthiness in Google's eyes.
Technical SEO Checklist
Ensure your site loads over HTTPS (check for the padlock in your browser bar). Verify your site is mobile-responsive using Google's Mobile-Friendly Test. Submit your sitemap to Google Search Console. Check your site speed using PageSpeed Insights and aim for a score above 80. Ensure your robots.txt file isn't accidentally blocking important pages. Install a broken link checker and fix any 404 errors. These technical foundations ensure Google can crawl and index your content properly.
