Test Your Current Speed
Use Google PageSpeed Insights (pagespeed.web.dev) or GTmetrix (gtmetrix.com) to measure your current loading speed. These tools not only give you a score but tell you exactly what's slowing your site down, prioritised by impact. Aim for a PageSpeed score above 80 on mobile and a load time under 3 seconds.
Most Common Causes of Slow Loading
Unoptimised images (too large, not compressed) are the number one culprit. Too many plugins, especially poorly coded ones. No caching plugin installed. Cheap, overcrowded shared hosting. Heavy theme with excessive features. External scripts from ads, analytics, or social media widgets. Each of these can add seconds to your load time.
Fixing Speed Issues Step by Step
Install and configure a caching plugin (LiteSpeed Cache or WP Super Cache). Compress all images using ShortPixel. Deactivate and delete any plugins you don't actively use. Install Autoptimize to minify CSS and JavaScript. Enable lazy loading for images. Use Cloudflare's free CDN. If speed is still poor after these optimisations, consider upgrading your hosting plan or switching to a faster host.
